By just two years of age, 80% of dogs have some form of periodontal disease (gum disease), with small and toy breed dogs, being particularly susceptible.

Bad breath is often the first sign and up to the stage of severe gingivitis, it's reversible. Once it becomes moderate periodontitis, it's not.

Plaque is a key culprit

When plaque is allowed to build up on our pet’s teeth - and when it hardens it becomes tartar - it allows the bacteria within to produce the volatile sulphur compounds hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan which contribute both to bad breath and periodontal disease. Bad breath can also be a sign of gut microbiome imbalance.

Poor oral health is serious

Chronic gingivitis and periodontitis can lead to painful conditions like:

  • Tooth rotting
  • Jaw fractures
  • Tooth abscesses
  • Gingival recession  
  • Bone loss

Cranberry
Cranberry phenols are compounds found in cranberries that can change the behavior of harmful bacteria in the mouth without killing them. This is important because if the bacteria were killed, it could disrupt the balance of good and bad bacteria in the mouth, potentially leading to the growth of resistant bacteria. Instead, cranberry phenols interfere with the virulence properties of harmful bacteria,making it more difficult for them to cause damage to teeth and gums.

Green tea, thyme and sage

Green tea contains compounds called catechins, which have antimicrobial properties that can help reduce plaque build up and fight against the bacteria that cause gingivitis and other gum diseases.


Thyme and sage are herbs that have been shown to have antimicrobial properties. This means they can help fight against harmful bacteria that can cause oral health problems such as gum disease, bad breath, and cavities.

Bioflavonoids and blackcurrant

Citrus bioflavonoids and vitamin C (blackcurrant is high in vitamin c) act as both anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic agents limiting the growth of certain bacteria - eg streptoccocus mutans - associated with bad breath, dental cavities formation and periodontal diseases.

They also reduce volatile sulphur comoundsmethyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulphide and dimethyl sulphide, in turn reducing bad breath.
