Homemade Kidney Support Diet for Dogs

If your dog has been diagnosed with early-stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), it’s crucial to provide them with a diet tailored to support their kidney health while ensuring they receive all the essential nutrients they need to thrive.

This homemade kidney diet is carefully formulated to meet the unique needs of dogs in early stage CKD (Stages 1). It's designed to help slow the progression of the disease, improve quality of life, and ensure your pet stays as healthy and happy as possible.

Key Features of our Kidney Support Diet

This diet includes high-quality, easily digestible protein sources like lean beef and chicken liver.

It provides just enough protein to maintain muscle mass without putting additional strain on your dog's kidneys, which is important in the early stages of CKD.

Phosphorus management is critical in kidney disease, as excess phosphorus can accelerate kidney damage.

This diet is formulated to provide lower phosphorus levels using carefully selected ingredients helping to reduce the burden on your dog’s kidneys.

Dogs with kidney disease often need extra energy, which we provide through healthy fats.

This diet includes sunflower oil and cod liver oil, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support kidney function, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthy coat and skin.

An ideal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 3.18:1 is achieved in this diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids from cod liver oil help reduce inflammation and support kidney health, which is particularly beneficial for dogs with CKD.

Sodium levels are kept low to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, which is common in dogs with kidney disease.

Meanwhile, potassium is balanced to support muscle function and overall health, as low potassium levels can occur in dogs with CKD.

Fresh ingredients like bananas and sweet potatoes provide natural sources of vitamins (such as Vitamin C and B vitamins) and antioxidants, which support your dog’s immune system and overall health.

Sweet potatoes also provide easily digestible carbohydrates for energy.

Dogs with CKD can sometimes have a reduced appetite, so this diet is formulated to be both nutritious and palatable, encouraging your dog to eat well and maintain a healthy weight.

How the diet supports kidney health

This homemade diet provides a holistic approach to managing early-stage kidney disease.

By controlling the levels of protein, phosphorus, and sodium while providing essential fatty acids and nutrients, this diet aims to slow down the progression of CKD,
reduce the workload on the kidneys, and enhance your dog's quality of life.

Before starting any new diet, especially for a dog with a medical condition, consult with your veterinarian to ensure it’s the right choice for your pet. Adjustments may be necessary to suit your dog's specific needs and to monitor their health progress over time.

The Kidney Support Diet was developed by Dr Anna Sutton, a physiologist and registered animal nutritionist with clinical nutrition training from the European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies (ESAVS).
