INGREDIENTS

Green tea is particularly rich in health-promoting flavonoids  including catechins and their derivatives. The most abundant catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, which is thought to play a pivotal role in the green tea’s anticancer and antioxidant effects. It has also been suggested that green tea also promotes periodontal health by reducing inflammation, preventing bone resorption and limiting the growth of certain bacteria associated with periodontal diseases and plaque build up.

The use of thyme, because of its various antiseptic and antioxidant properties, is widely reported in gingivitis, stomatitis, and bad breath. You could even argue it’s like Listerine for dogs. A component of thyme, known as thymol, appears to inhibit growth of oral pathogens in the mouth and in combination with other essential oils, may reduce tooth decay. Thymol is one of the essential oils with antibacterial effects found in the human mouthwash, Listerine.

Sage has a range of therapeutic activities including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antioxidant effects.  Volatile monoterpenoid is a major constituent, reported to be an effective antibacterial. Sage has been shown to have an antibacterial action against streptococcus mutans in dental plaque, in people. Streptococcus mutans, along with porphyromonas gingivalis and candida albicans, is an oral pathogen responsible for bad breath and tooth decay.

Lysozyme is an antibacterial enzyme, present in all body fluids, including saliva. In the oral cavity, lysozyme plays an important role in controlling microbial overgrowth, reducing the number of bacteria in the dental biofilm, decreasing colonisation, and modifying bacterial metabolism. In particular, it’s been shown to inhibit glucose fermentation by oral streptococci and help prevent dental plaque.

Blackcurrant fruit contains polyphenolic substances with antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. Various studies have highlighted the antibacterial activity exerted by ribes nigrum (blackcurrant) juice on bacterial strains - in particular streptoccocus mutans, porphyromonas gingivalis and candida albicans - associated with gingival inflammation, oral malodour, and dental caries formation.

Milk thistle is a flowering plant in the Aster family, used in traditional medicine as a liver tonic. Milk thistle generally supports the immune system through its powerful antioxidant, free-radical scavenging action, its ability to preserve the supply of another important antioxidant, glutathione, as well as direct effects on immune cells. It’s helpful for healing after drug therapy, vaccinations, and infections such as canine parvovirus.

Fruits, such as blueberries, are good antioxidants because they contain phenolics that preferentially react with free radicals. Oxidative damage from free radicals plays an important role in several diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease. It’s also been shown that strenuous exercise in people and dogs produces free radicals and that maintaining antioxidant levels by supplementing the diet with blueberries may prevent exercise-induced oxidative damage.

Kale is rich in betacarotene as well as lutein, and other vitamins and minerals. Kale is rightly called a superfood and is rich in betacarotene as well as lutein, and other vitamins and minerals. Dietary lutein has been shown to cause a significantly enhanced cell-mediated and humoral immune response in dogs. It’s also been shown to enhance the antibody response of dogs given routine vaccinations.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and an antioxidant that acts to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. In The Einstein, we use a naturally-derived form, d-alpha tocopherol acetate. (The synthetic form is known as dl-alpha tocopherol.)

L-carnitine is an amino acid that transports fatty acids into our cells' mitochondria so they can be oxidised to produce energy. It also transports the toxic compounds out. Carnitine is particularly important for ageing dogs as the concentration of it declines with age and reduces the integrity of the mitochondrial membrane. In The Einstein, we use acetyl l-carnitine, the most effective form for the brain.

Vitamin C is essential in maintaining oxidative protection for the soluble phase of cells as well as preventing Vitamin E from propagating free radical production. In The Einstein, we use vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid.
