In recent years, many of us have begun to make more conscious decisions about what we eat.

Some of us are vegan. Some are vegetarian. Some are pescatarian. Many are flexitarian.

For some it’s about sustainability, for others about animal kindness, and for still others about a healthier option. Often, it's all three.

Whether you're meat free 7 days a week, or just mixing it up a little, we celebrate you... and the many benefits eating less meat brings. To you, and the planet.

Now, this flexible mindset around meat eating is pretty awesome, right? But what about those we love? No, not the kids, they’re loving Flexi Fridays. (“Impossible Burgers this week mum…pleeease”)...

We mean...what about your best friend?

Whilst we're loving mixing up the options for our human family, many of us would also love to know if we can introduce some meat-free options to Fido's diet...and still keep them in the best of health. After all, a more flexible feeding routine for Fido seems just the right thing…. because there's no one more naturally flexi than Fido!

Each day, our furry friends move seamlessly - and super flexibly! - from play mate to team mate to best mate; from protector to first child; from therapy dog to finder of lost things.

Isn’t it time we returned the favour?

A plate of greenhouse gas? About 7kg CO2/kg of food to be exact

A plate of greenhouse gas?

Right now, about 35% of global GHG emissions comes from food and agriculture. About 25% – 30% of that is related to pet food.

We also know meat and dairy products emit more greenhouse gasses than plant-based foods, and use more agricultural land and fresh water. For example, beef produces 25.2 kg CO2 -e/kg. Premium dry dog food about 7 kg CO2 -e/kg.

Then there's waste

31% of all food grown worldwide goes uneaten. Food in landfills adds up almost 10% of total global emissions.

By 2050, the world human population will reach 10 billion. Our demand for meat and dairy food will be 55% to 70% more than it is today.

And that’s just for people.

You know as well as we do that we’re getting dogs and cats as never before. And the trend to high meat diets for pets, makes the environmental problem even worse.

The planet simply cannot sustain the amount of meat we want to eat.

It's time for alternatives.

A plate of goodness...with a little bit of gas?

We're not asking you to turn your dog vegan. (Although you could, easily.) What we are suggesting, is that your dog could healthily and happily go flexitarian. And together, you could help save the planet one meal at a time.

Mix it up with a few meat-free meals. Add a little bit of meat to a high protein base. Give them a treat meal every now and again of more meat.

Your dog will still be healthy. (Maybe even more than before.)

A plate of goodness, with a little bit of gas? Less than 1kg CO2.
Kibble fed gods vs Vegan dogs

Healthier than you'd think.

A recent research study of 2,500 pets (on vegan, raw and conventional diets), assessed seven general indicators of health, such as multiple visits to the vets, and 22 common illnesses.

The headline? Vegan dogs visited the vet less and had fewer health issues.

Among the findings were that 17% of dogs on conventional diets had four or more visits to the vet over the course of a year, compared with 9% for those on vegan diets and 8% for those on raw meat diets.

The percentage of dogs reported to have suffered from health disorders was 49% for the conventional diet, 43% for the raw meat diet and 36% for the vegan diet.

It all began with TV.

I vividly remember watching the ABC’s Fight for Planet A: Our Climate Challenge, a couple of years ago. It’s a three-part doco about how we can all reduce our individual and collective carbon emissions. It aimed to get us to act.

It worked.

I’d never been a climate sceptic, but it hit home to me that there really is no planet B. And that I needed to take real action…immediately.

I realised human and pet food has a big environmental impact. I became vegan myself…and I began researching what a healthy non-meat diet would look like for dogs and cats. Hello, Planet A Pet Food.

I knew there was vegan kibble out there. But there was no way I was going to embrace that kind of ultra processed food. Whatever we came up with had to be fresh. But it also had to be nutritionally complete.

The Planet A approach recognises that just as every human isn't going to go vegan, every dog isn't either. And that's completely fine.

We embrace a flexi approach! Planet A gives you options: Meat-Free, less meat with our protein base mix, and a bit more meat with our sustainable meat completer.

Give your dog a flexi diet. Because there really is no planet B.

Let's save the planet one dinner at a time...
